NOTE FROM IDITAROD VET:
Muscle soreness in the shoulder area is a problem frequently noted in sled dogs running in mid-distance and distance races. Appropriate conditioning and a driver's skill can certainly affect the incidence, but difficult trail conditions can override these factors and make the problem inescapable. A combination of rest, massage with Algyval, heat, and warming the dog up prior to running, may allow a member of the team to run who normally could not continue. After years of struggling with various combinations of tapes, vetwraps, elastikon, harnesses, etc., to keep chemical handwarmers in place
and keep the shoulder area in general warm, the shoulder warmer has arisen! It makes the whole process easy and effective. As a trail vet experienced on Iditarod, the Wyoming Stage Stop, and as head vet for the Grand Portage Passage Race, I welcome the arrival of Katahdin's product on the racing scene. I worked with it this year on several distance races and find that it
fits well, is not bulky, and the dogs seem comfortable wearing it. There are custom pockets where hand warmers are slid into place. Whether just a few are taken along for therapy as needed, or enough for the whole team routinely....they seem to expedite care in a very positive way.
